G.Q. How do we design our fuel cell system and write up the research report?

In class today we read the sample essay as a catalyst to discussion about what do we need to do and what information do we need to gather before we can approach writing the research essay in English class?

• Determine the population
• Use the graph to find the electricity concumption
• Use the chart to determine the output for the fuel cells for each zone
• Find the efficiency rates for the fuel cells you are using.
• Decide where the fuel cells will go
• Decide how the hydrogen will be produced (internal or external reformers–depends on the type of fuel cell you use)
• Decide how you will distribute the electricity (self contained for each building, a micro grid for a small area and using power lines to get it to the consumer)

  Homework: Bring Abstract and Research Essay to Tech on Monday/Tuesday because we will select–Your Tech Portfolio should have the following:
• complete the deisgn brief problem statement (make it ready for assessment)
• summarize notes on readings (determine inmportance, only the ones you need for the essay–it’s prewriting for the research essay)
• annotated bibliography (typed and ready to go)

Note: if you are having trouble with finding specific data for your essay, do the best you can and we will try to help you out on Monday/Tuesday in class.

In class we started our annotated bibliograpy to organize our thoughts around the design problem.

• Read assigned chapter from Hydrogen Hot Stuff Cool Science
• Complete annotated bibliography (to this point) because it will be attached to the research essay you are writing for Niki’s class.
• Write your summary of research (to this point) because it will lead right into the research essay you are writing for Niki’s class.  Write your research summaries in chunks (the essay will be done in Niki’s class):
  • Explain what you know about how fuel cells work. (Use the one type you are using in your group’s city, don’t describe all kinds of fuel cells)
  • Describe how you get Hydrogen by using renewable energy sources? (Write about the way your city will get Hydrogen, not all possible ways.)
  • Explain how that energy source is renewable.
  • Explain how the Hydrogen will be stored before it is used.

E.Q. What decisions lie ahead?

Today we worked in groups to share our investigation/research and to make some preliminary decisions about proceeding.

• Which areas of our future city will benefit from fuel cells?
  • How is electricity produced and distributed to that area now?
• Which fuel cell technology is feasible for that job? (to the best of your knowledge thus far)
• Will you ADD or CHANGE OVER to 100% fuel cell technology?
• What problems/drawbacks/challenges need to be overcome to make the new system work well and be efficient?
