Through the Lens of Homo Faber

Posted by Madeline Brownstone on November 9, 2006

    Thursday A-Day 1st /4th periods (November 9, 2006)
    Friday B-Day 1st/5th Periods (November 10, 2006)

    Guiding Questions:

    • How and why do we create?
    • What are the benefits and drawbacks of our creations?

    Due Today:

Spot check portfolios (each day another group will have portfolios checked). Please be sure your work is up to date and process logs are kept in order in the creation stage pocket.

    Homework:

    • Complete the homo faber reflections (See handout.)
    • Continue to grow your city

Block by Block–Mapping a Model City

Posted by Madeline Brownstone on November 6, 2006

    Friday B-Day 1st/5th Periods (November 3, 2006)
    Monday A-Day 1st /4th periods (November 6, 2006)
    Friday B-Day 1st/5th Periods (November 8, 2006)

    Guiding Questions:

    • How do we write process logs for group work?

    Due Today:

Spot checkĀ  portfolios (each day another group will have portfolios checked). Please be sure your work is up to date and process logs are kept in order in the creation stage pocket.

Process logs are a reflection of your own work. If I take all 4 (or 5 logs) and read them side by side, they should give me a clear picture of what each individual contributed in that session.

Protocol for Group Work Process Logs

    1. Name of Individual
    2. Date
    3. Time Started
    4. Time Ended
    5. Duration (in minutes)
    6. What did I acomplish today? (Reflect on what you as an idividual did)
    7. What problems did our group solve today? (Reflect on the group process and what problems your group solved.)
    8. What did I learn as a result of this work today? (Reflect on what you learned about yourself, your group members, your ability to work in gorups, and/or any technical knowledge you gained, etc.)
    9. What are my next steps?

Your next step should appear in the next log’s accomplishments.

    Time

In class today we worked on the final draft of the design, collaborated on what the first three or four tasks of creation will be, and reviewed the common problems from the last assessment.

Homework Due Wednesday/Thursday (use Google Docs or bring evidence of work):

    1. Complete the allocation of the 7 Resources of Technology
    2. Begin the logical list of tasks to be done at the creation stage.
    3. Start playing the game according to your group’s plan.

    Planning Stage to Creation Stage

Posted by Madeline Brownstone on November 2, 2006

    Wednesday B-Day 1st/5th Periods (November 1, 2006)
    Thursday A-Day 1st /4th periods (November 2, 2006)

    Guiding Questions:

    • What needs to be done before we begin creation stage??
    • How do we do planning for a group project?
    • How is it different from an individual project?
    • Under what conditions would it be reasonable to beging the creation of the city before the entire planning stage is completed?

    Due Today:
Design Stage Portfolio (See rubrics under HANDOUTS)

    1. Needs Analysis
    2. Your design map
    3. Your justification of why you selected the best design

In class today we worked on the final draft of the design, collaborated on what the first three or four tasks of creation will be, and reviewed the common problems from the last assessment.

On the last assessment for planning, many students were confused about allocating the 7 resources of techology. Take note:

    • stay focused on the context: you are preparing for the creation stage, at the creation stage of this project you will be working on the Sim City file.
    • material of the actual product you will make (Sim City file)
    • information (what information can be found in that file?)

Logical tasks (just list the first three or four for now in class):

    • from this point onward (not all the tasks involved in every stage of the design cycle)
    • tasks should take you from the begining of the creation stage to the end of creation.

    Time Management

    • you’ll be making a Gantt Chart (in class)

Homework Due Wednesday/Thursday (use Google Docs or bring evidence of work):

    1. Complete the allocation of the 7 Resources of Technology
    2. Begin the logical list of tasks to be done at the creation stage.
